NWOAL produces 3 state champs as Lytle repeats

Bragging rights belonged to the Northwest Ohio Athletic League in wrestling this season as the league boasted three state champions.

Swanton senior Mimmo Lytle earned his second straight state title and was named the most outstanding wrestler in Division III. Lytle (43-1) defeated Huron's Nino Majoy 1-0 in the final of the 285-pound weight class in Columbus.

Delta senior Luke Kern also ended his season with a win in D-III state final at 138 to post a 44-1 record. Kern rallied to knock off Zane Nelson of Apple Creek Waynedale 10-6.

Archbold senior Jordan Cowell (64-2) notched a 7-4 win over Waynedale's Brenden Stanley to take the D-III title at 152. Cowell set a state record for most wins in a season and for a career wins, finishing with a record of 237-21. His father, John, won a state title for Archbold in 1973.

Delta finished third as a team in Division III led by sophomore Tyler Fahrer, who was runner-up at 145. The Panthers also got fifth-place finishes from sophomore Kyle Keller (106) and junior Jared Mattin (152).

North Baltimore junior Dalton Ishmael took third at 195 to finish with a 50-1 record.

Finishing fourth were Woodmore's Evan Ulinski (106) and Liberty Center's Zach Niner (132).

Another NWOAL school, Wauseon, finished seventh in Division II.

Senior Dalton Nicely (46-7) reached the championship bout at 138 but lost 13-5 to Nate Skonieczny of Cuyahoga Falls Walsh Jesuit.

Wauseon junior Zane Krall (47-4) took second place at 220, losing 6-1 to Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy's Matt Meadows.

Central Catholic sophomore Alex Mossing (47-11) placed third at 132.

Oak Harbor junior Luke Cramer (138) and senior Alex Bergman (152) both took fourth.

In Division I, Clay finished fifth as a team with six place winners.

Eagles senior Garrett Gray (44-7) reached the final at 285 only to suffer a heartbreaking loss 6-5 to Wadsworth's Nick Tavanello in sudden death.

Clay seniors Mike Screptock (126), Jacob Conine (132), and Angelo Amenta (138) all finished fifth.

St. John's Jesuit senior Ted Schoen took third at 195 and became the first Titan to place at state since 1999.
