Southview football coach Jim Mayzes has been fined $1,000 by the Ohio High School Athletic Association, and will have another year's probation added to a previous penalty, according to Tim Stried, OHSAA director of information services.

Mayzes, who led the Cougars to a 15-0 season and Division II state championship in 2008, was recently suspended by Sylvania Schools for two games because of a violation of OHSAA bylaws dealing with recruiting.

Sylvania Schools superintendent Brad Rieger confirmed last Thursday that Mayzes violated a recruiting bylaw by speaking to an incoming transfer student before that student had made contact with Southview's administration to begin enrollment registration.

Mayzes was cited for another bylaw violation last fall, when it was deemed that he had contact with a prospective student who was in the eighth grade in Sylvania Schools at the time. The infraction occurred because that student's residence was in the defined Northview High School district within the school system.

Mayzes served the first week of his suspension last Friday, missing Southview's 28-14 win over visiting Bowling Green. He has been barred from practice again this week and will be off the sidelines Friday when the Cougars play at Anthony Wayne.
