Silverman places 7th; Ottawa Hills takes 4th as team in D-III golf

Ottawa Hills junior Ben Silverman earned a third consecutive trip to the Division III state golf tournament.

Silverman earned All-Ohio second-team honors by placing seventh. He carded a 78-76-154 to finish 10 strokes behind the winner.

The Green Bears qualified as a team for the second time in the last three years and finished fourth.

Freshman Michael Denner shot a 164 to place 24th, while senior Brian Hoeflinger and sophomore Matt Abendroth shot 168 apiece to finish tied for 34th. Junior Ben Dayton had a 174 to place 44th.

In 2010, Silverman led the Green Bears to a state runner-up performance and placed 13th. Last season, Ottawa Hills did not qualify as a team, but Silverman earned All-Ohio first-team honors by placing fourth.

Also in D-III, Van Buren placed sixth as a team, led by senior Jason Sawyer, who placed 20th. Fremont St. Joseph senior Connor Dudley finished 16th.

In Division I, Findlay and St. Francis de Sales both qualified as teams, finishing 11th and 12th, respectively, in a 12-team field.

Findlay senior Eli Stacy tied for 12th.

In Division II, Wauseon and Bryan qualified and placed eighth and 10th, respectively. Bryan sophomore Luke Shaffer finished in 21st and junior David Miller was 24th.

Girls: Baer, Dulltie for 5th at state

Woodmore senior Mikayla Baer and Lakota sophomore Makayla Dull had the best finishes among area qualifiers at the state girls golf meet.

Baer and Dull each shot a 156 to tie for fifth place in Division II and both earned All-Ohio first team.

In the Division I state meet, the St. Ursula and Findlay finished 11th and 12th, respectively, in the 12-team field.
