Prep notebook: Three area football coaches resign

Three area schools will be seeking new football coaches following resignations.

At Bowling Green, Steve Aungst resigned after three seasons. He led the Bobcats to a 11-19 overall record and 5-16 in the Northern Lakes League during his three years. Last season, Bowling Green was 3-7 (1-6 NLL).

At Clay, Mike Donnelly resigned after six seasons. Donnelly's Eagles compiled a 29-31 record overall and were 19-22 in league play.

His team went 5-5 overall and was 3-4 in the Three Rivers Athletic Conference last season. Donnelly will remain the athletic director.

At Otsego, Erik Johnson resigned after four seasons. The Knights were 13-27 overall and 10-16 in Suburban Lakes League and Northern Buckeye Conference play under Johnson

Last season, Otsego went 6-4 (5-2 NBC).

All three coaches said their decisions were based on a desire to spend more time with their families.

Football

Ottawa Hills standout Michael Geiger will receive his jersey to play in the Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl at halftime of the Green Bears’ basketball game Friday against Maumee Valley.

Geiger, who also played defensive back and wide receiver for Ottawa Hills, made 38-of-40 extra point attempts and connected on 6-of-10 field goals, including a school-record 54-yard kick this past season.

Geiger’s 51 kickoffs included 47 touchbacks.

The Semper Fi Bowl, which kicks off at 9 p.m. on Jan. 4 at the Home Depot Center in Los Angeles, will be televised by the NFL Network.

Geiger has verbally committed to sign a national letter of intent with Michigan State.

Soccer

Haley Malaczewski admits it wasn’t a sure thing when it came to weighing her future as a college soccer player.

Malaczewski, a senior at Central Catholic, believes the right variables clicked when she chose to commit to Bowling Green State University.

“I liked the players on the soccer team, and I knew some of the people there, and I thought it would be good to be with them,” Malaczewski said.

“And it was close to home.”

Malaczewski verbally committed to join the Falcons, and she chose BG over Cleveland State and Western Kentucky.

Malaczewski, a center forward, scored 23 goals and had 13 assists for the Irish and is a two-time second-team Ohio Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association Division I all-state selection.

She also was named the Three Rivers Athletic Conference player of the year the past two seasons and finished her career at Central Catholic with 69 goals and 29 assists.

Malaczewski also plays club soccer for Pacesetter Soccer Club.

“Club soccer is very quick and aggressive, but high school gives you a team feel,” Malaczewski said. “Going through summer conditioning and working in the weight room, that also gives you a college feel.”

Malaczewski will sign a national letter of intent to play for the Falcons when the spring signing period begins Feb. 6, 2013.

Water polo

Five boys and four girls from the area received All-Ohio honors.

On the boys side, seniors Connor Trimble of St. Francis and Jake Vlasnik, who attends Southview and swims on a combined team for Sylvania, were selected first team.

Honorable mention choices included seniors Adam Carroll of Napoleon, Matt Gustafson of St. Francis, and Michael Jennings of Sylvania, who attends Southview.

For the girls, senior Samantha Bloom of Napoleon was named first team, while seniors Makenzie Garringer of Napoleon and Lindsay Peyton, who attends Northview and played on the Sylvania team, were selected for the second team.

Junior Allison Seemann of Napoleon received honorable mention.

St. Francis finished third in the state boys meet while the Napoleon girls placed fourth.
