Maumee upset St. Francis de Sales 7-6 in the opening round of the state hockey tournament on Thursday night.

Senior Matt Young scored four goals while senior Sam Molnar tallied two goals, including the game winner with more than four minutes remaining in regulation.

Sophomore goalie Stephen Klocko finished with 40 saves.

“This was an exceptional win for Maumee hockey,” Panther coach Scott Young said. “We knocked it out of the park. Stephen had the game of his life.”

Young also had two assists, while Molnar had one.

The game was tied at 1 after the first period and was tied at 4 after the second period.

Maumee (21-8) scored three power play goals.

St. Francis freshman Matt White scored three goals for the Knights.

The Panthers advance to face top-seeded St. John's Jesuit on Monday.

“It was a great game. It went back and forth,” Young said.
