Wauseon girls capture district championship
Wyse, Vernot help Indians to narrow win; Eastwood runner-up in boys competition
5/25/2013OAK HARBOR — Wauseon's girls track and field team showed plenty of all-around balance at the Division II district meet Friday.
However, freshman Seneca Wyse delivered on a grand scale in the sprint events, sweeping the 100, 200, and 400 to lead the Indians to the championship.
Wyse won the 100 meters with a time of 12.81, then claimed the 400 in 59.94. She capped off the memorable day by running away from the 200 field, crossing the finish line first with a winning time of 26.19.
"It all worked out pretty well," Wyse said. "But I was really proud of my teammates and it's just awesome to win."
Wauseon needed every one of Wyse's 36 points, which also included six points for placing third in the long jump with an effort of 16 feet, 1/4 inch. Eastwood’s Aricka LaVoy was second in that event at 16-8.
The Indians claimed the title by one-quarter of a point.
Wauseon finished with 89.25 points, while runner-up Bellevue had 89.
Oak Harbor placed third with 80.75 points, followed by Eastwood (71) and Edison (63.25).
"I'm extremely proud of them," Wauseon coach Robin Fisher said, after receiving the district title trophy. "They did an excellent job."
In the boys competition, Sandusky Perkins kept Eastwood from repeating as champions by a margin of 111.50-109.
Edison finished third with 69, followed by Archbold (53) and Bellevue (49).
There were plenty of contributors for the Wauseon girls, who finished as district runner-up last year.
Wauseon's Taylor Vernot came through with a sweep of her own by running first in the 1600 (5:12.47) and 3200 (11:34.37). Aneesa Volkman had a second-place effort in the 3200 with a time of 12:02.67.
Wauseon's Sally Frank registered a second-place showing in the discus with a throw measuring 111 feet and teammate Brandi Thompson finished fourth with a toss of 106-8. Genoa’s Karlie Borowicz placed third at 108-0.
The top four finishers in each event qualified for regionals.
Genoa freshman Carly Gose won the 800 (2:21.93). She also placed second to Vernot in the 1600 (5:24.62).
Lake teammates Nicole Pennington and Rebecca Boos finished second and third, respectively, in the 100 with times of 12.92 and 13.03. LaVoy ran fourth (13.17) in the first race of the day won by Wyse.
Oak Harbor’s Athena Eli ran second in the 400 (1:00.59) and teammate Trinity Gephart placed fourth in the 1600 (5:33.18).
Rossford’s Jessie Pietrasz was third in the 400 (1:00.92) and Eastwood’s Maddie Jackson came through to take third in the 800 (2:24.46).
In the boys meet, Eastwood sprinter Isaiah Conkle attempted to do all he could to try and help lead the Eagles to another district championship.
The senior won the 100 (11.00) and placed second in the 200 (22.56). He also ran on the Eagles’ 800 relay team (Joey Salinas, Derek Snowden, Brennan Seifert, Isaiah Conkle) that finished first with a time of 1:31.20 and victorious 400 relay team (Conkle, Snowden, Seifert, Steven Bruning) that streaked to victory with a time of 43.99.
Bryan's Brandon Poncsak looked impressive in the hurdles events, capturing the 110 hurdles (14.52) and running second in the 300 hurdles (39.91). Perkins' Dale Irby won the 300 hurdles in 39.80.
"I'm proud of myself," Poncsak said. "I felt like I came out strong to start the races."
Archbold's Levi Wyse claimed two victories by winning the 200 (22.51) and the 400 (51.36). He also ran second in the 100 (11.18), while Swanton’s Thomas Bryant and Oak Harbor’s Cole Weirich placed third and fourth, respectively, with times of 11.30 and 11.62.
Rossford's Ryan Clay won the 800 (1:56.73) and Eastwood’s Tim Hoodlebrink and Oak Harbor’s Tyler Sievert ran second and third with times of 1:57.57 and 1:58.01, respectively.
Eastwood’s Jake Hoodlebrink and Archbold’s Quinton Ranzau placed third and fourth, respectively, in the 400 with times of 52.15 and 52.20.
Wauseon's Quintin Reiser won the 3200 (9:49.67) after running second in the 1600 (4:28.11). Bryan’s Jacob Will came across the finish line for the 3200 in third place with a time of 9:54.31. Eastwood's Devin Snowden covered 22-5.75 to win the long jump.
Snowden also ran third in the 300 hurdles (40.15) while teammate Joey Salinas placed fourth (40.44).
Genoa’s Logan Bryer was second in the discus with a 168-4, while Wauseon’s Noah Castle placed third at 167-4.
