TIFFIN — Anthony Wayne freshman Kaitlyn Ray pitched a complete-game shutout to lead the Generals to a Division I district title on Saturday.

Ray struck out 11 batters and scattered four hits over seven innings in a 2-0 victory over Bowling Green.

The Generals (18-10) broke through for a first run in the fourth inning. Haley Olvera led off with a double and came around to score on a double by Cassie Kaptur.

Manny Kistner started off the seventh inning with a single then scored on an error.

“We came out swinging,” AW coach Carolyn Vogtsberger said. “We didn’t have success every inning, but we kept at it. We hit a lot of hard balls. Then we put together a few offensive innings. I felt like we had momentum.”

The two Anthony Wayne runs would hold up as Ray turned in a dominant performance and dropped her ERA to 1.10.

“I knew she was good, but varsity is a big jump up from junior high ball,” Vogtsberger said. “She's the real deal.”

The Bobcats threatened in the fourth inning when Kelsey Parker hit a one-out triple, but Ray struck out the next two batters.

AW has won five district titles in the last 20 years. BG (6-21) upset Perrysburg and Fremont Ross to reach the district final.

Bowling Green junior pitcher Hanna Williford gave up six hits and fanned four.

“BG was very good today,” Vogtsberger said. “Their kids came out and played hard. They are a good team. That’s what you get when you’re playing in the NLL.”

The Generals advance to play Clay in the regional semifinals on Wednesday at Clyde. The Eagles swept Anthony Wayne in a doubleheader this season, winning both games by one run.

Anthony Wayne won a state title in 2003 and has captured two regional titles.

Clay has never made it to the state semifinals.
