Outlook: Good team speed should once again be the hallmark of the Cougars. Southview also is bigger this year, but depth along the lines is a definite concern.

McDonald is battling with Gilmore and sophomore Sam Stout (6-1) for the bulk of the snaps at quarterback but Mayzes said he expects all three to play.

Stout, Grant, and Topolski all started on the line last year and are among eight players that saw significant action on defense last year. Stout has committed to play at Cincinnati.

Hall, who had 53 tackles last season and was named All-NLL second team, has been recruited to play at Northwestern.

Hall and Pinckney, who had 32 catches for 388 yards (12.1 per reception), are four-year starters. Simms looks to make an impact after transferring from Whitmer.

Mayzes said the program’s consistent success is directly related to a coaching staff that has been together for a long time, including Kevin Schmidt and former Springfield coach Phil DeMars.

“We have a real cohesive coaching staff,” he said.

Mayzes said his team faces a gauntlet in the nonleague schedule with games against St. Francis, Central, and Findlay.
