Woodward rallies for 20-14 win over Stritch; Polar Bears's win is first since 2007

The losing streak is over for Woodward.

Darius Fleming threw a 44-yard touchdown pass to Vedel Williams with 1:46 left in the fourth quarter tonight in the season opener against Cardinal Stritch at Clay as the Polar Bears ended a 53-game losing streak with the 20-14 win.

The streak tied for the third longest in Ohio history. The longest losing streak was 64 games by Youngstown North from 1957-64.

Woodward’s last victory came in the 2007 with a 30-13 victory over Waite in the sixth week of the season.

Mordecai Brownlee rushed for 125 yards on 16 carries for the Polar Bears and scored on a 72 yard touchdown run.

Fleming also rushed 13 yards n for the game’s first touchdown.

Cardinal Stritch tied the score at six in the second quarter on a 16-yard pass from Joe Sinay to James Dobson.

The Cardinals also got a touchdown from Rickie Pratt on a one-yard out in the fourth quarter.
