Generals outscore Irish 22-4 in second quarter surge

BOWLING GREEN – Anthony Wayne utilized a huge second-quarter surge to knock off Central Catholic 61-52 today at a girls basketball showcase event at Bowling Green State University.

The Generals outscored the Irish 22-4 in the second quarter at the Stroh Center. Anthony Wayne used good defensive rebounding and crisp offensive execution to build an insurmountable 35-21 lead at half.

It was the third of five games to be played today at the Showcase at the Stroh event.

Whitmer defeated St. Ursula 55-23 in the opening game. Southview then held off Bowling Green 57-54 in the second game. Notre Dame takes on Northview at 5 p.m. and Perrysburg plays Lima Bath at 7 p.m.

Central made just 2 of 11 shots in the second quarter and Anthony Wayne grabbed eight defensive rebounds. The Generals held the Irish without a basket over the final 6:13 of the second quarter with a 22-2 run.

Jasmine Bonivel poured in a game-high 18 points for the Generals (14-5). Abby Allen and Victoria Burdo each scored 10 points for Anthony Wayne.

Demi Russell paced Central Catholic (12-7) with 13 points, while Byrdy Galernik chipped in with 11 and Kiana McClendon had eight.

The Irish pulled within 10 points early in the third quarter and nine in the fourth quarter. But AW's big lead was too much to overcome.
