The march to state continued for some sports teams and ended for others across the area. The tennis season, however, wrapped up Saturday with a runner-up finish for the Browns brothers duo from St. John‘s. And in Michigan, it was state championship weekend for track and field as Whiteford senior Miranda Johnson repeated her state titles in the long jump and 200-meter dash.

Whiteford’s Johnson wins state long jump third straight time

HUDSONVILLE, Mich. — Whiteford senior Miranda Johnson repeated her state titles in the long jump and 200-meter dash Saturday at the Michigan Division IV state meet. Johnson won her third consecutive state long jump title with a distance of 18 feet, 6½ inches, breaking her own meet record of 18-2½ from last year. She won the 200 with a time of 25.15 seconds.

St. John‘s Brown brothers 2nd at state

COLUMBUS — On the way to a fourth-place finish in doubles at the Division I state tennis tournament a year ago, the St. John’s Jesuit team of brothers Ryan and Kevin Brown won two three-set matches and lost another. Their propensity for being able to handle long battles paid off at this year’s state tournament Saturday at Ohio State as they left as runners-up.

Eastwood boys track team takes D-II regional title

LEXINGTON, Ohio — Tim Hoodlebrink and the Eastwood boys track team did it again. The Eagles won the Division II regional track and field championship for the second year in a row. Hoodlebrink led the way by winning the 800-meter race and running on the winning 1600 and 3200 relay teams.

Bloom-Carroll mows down Elmwood in regional softball final

BELLEFONTAINE, Ohio -- Taran Alvelo, a Division I commitment before she even stepped foot in high school, threw two no-hitters and a one-hitter earlier in Bloom-Carroll’s defense of last year’s Division III state title. Not as sharp this time out, she was nonetheless dominant, striking out 16 Elmwood Royals in a 19-3 rout shortened to six innings.

Young Lakota team edged in regional final

FINDLAY — Lakota had at least one baserunner in every inning but the first, but it couldn’t get enough of them home, falling 2-1 Saturday to Wayne Trace in a Division IV softball regional final at Diamond Fields. Wayne Trace scored twice in the first inning, and that was enough in the battle of the Raiders.

Maumee softball struggles early, loses in regional final

BUCYRUS, Ohio — On the big stage, Maumee came out tight and dug a hole the Panthers could not extricate themselves from Saturday. Maumee was one of just eight teams left playing in the Division II tournament. But the upstart Panthers yielded seven runs to Lima Bath in the first two innings of a D-II softball regional final and ultimately fell 12-3 at Bucyrus High School.
