The Southview Cougars ripped into the Northview Wildcats Friday night in a Northern Lakes League boys basketball game.
Cougar senior Jordan Hunt turned up the intensity in the fourth quarter to give his team a 66-44 victory against its cross-town rival.
“We’ve worked really hard this week in practice,” Hunt said.
Seniors Allen Gant and Hunt led the Cougars with 15 points each, followed by senior Chris Johnson with 10 points.
Wildcat junior Conner Hartnett led his team with 18 points.
Southview (7-11, 5-8) started off the game with a five-point lead after a two-point basket from Johnson, followed by a 3-pointer from Gant. Senior James Racicot put two points on the board for the Wildcats (5-13, 3-10).
The Cougars continued to dominate the Wildcats through the first quarter and finished with an eight-point lead.
“We need to make more shots,” Northview coach Terry Shadle said. “They shot well, we shot awful. Being the cross-town rival, the emotions are high, and I think the emotions got the best of us tonight.”
The Wildcats couldn’t come back in the second quarter as Gant and Hunt continued to dominate on offense. The Cougars took a 29-20 lead into halftime.
“[Northview’s] always one of the goals on our board, and I’m sure we are for them,” Southview coach Marc Jump said. “It’s nice to beat them twice.”
Southview added six consecutive points to start of the second half. Senior Joey Vermilya added three points to the board to give the Cougars a 44-25 lead in the third quarter.
“I’ll definitely miss the rivalry,” Hunt said.
“We have all our kids back,” Jump said. “It’s our fifth game with a full roster. Now we just have some more game prep to do.”
