Southview edges AW for NLL boys crown

Cougars’ Johnson wins sprints 3 straight years; Clody leads Perrysburg to girls championship

It came down to the wire but the Southview boys proved again to be the top track and field team in the Northern Lakes League.

Southview junior Malcolm Johnson became a three-time NLL champion in both sprint events. But the Cougars trailed Anthony Wayne by one point entering the final event at Maumee.

The Cougars edged the Generals 148-147 to claim a third straight NLL championship. Perrysburg was third and Northview finished fourth.

The Perrysburg girls won their fifth title in the last six years as Courtney Clody won both the 800 and 1600.

“It was do or die,” Pinckney said. “We knew we worked hard and that we could run. We really had to fight. We stayed strong and finished. This is very sweet.”

Johnson won the 200 in 22.20 seconds, edging out Pinckney (22.54). Johnson cruised in the 100 in 10.88.

“Being the fastest kid in the NLL three years in a row is an incredible feeling to have those bragging rights year after year,” Johnson said. “I'm fortunate. I couldn't do it without my teammates and coaches. I intend to go for four next year.”

Johnson also was a member of the 800 relay team with Keith Gilmore, Jaquan Bowers, and Perry Burkesth which won in 1:31.03. He also anchored the 400 relay team with Gilmore, Jeremy Cook, and Keith Cadwell which ran a meet record time of 43.15.

Anthony Wayne's Jayden Corbitt won the shot put (52 feet, 5 inches) and discus (151-4). The Generals' Shane Weiss took the high jump (6-0).

In the 110 hurdles, Jamar Allen of AW won with a time of 15.65, while the Generals' Ose Omofoma earned his second straight league title (39.83) in the 300 hurdles.

The Generals led Southview 139-138 going into the 1600 relay, but finished second in the final event.

“Anthony Wayne had a great team effort and we knew it would be a real tight meet for us,” Southview coach Lee Boyer said. “We couldn't separate from them. I went down and told our kids, 'It's simple. We're down one point and we win, we win.' I had all the confidence in that relay team. The kids rose to the occasion. They are competitors.”

Pinckney broke a 26-year-old NLL record in the long jump with a leap of 22-7. The previous record of 22-1¾ was set by Anil Emmaty of Bowling Green in 1987.

“It's a great feeling knowing that people believed I could do it,” Pinckney said. “But a million people can tell you you can fly, but you have to do it.”

Pinckney won the 400 by pulling away down the stretch to finish in 49.25.

Perrysburg's Bryant Byrd also was a double winner. He won the 1600 in 4:32.41 and then the 800 in 1:59.08.

The 3200 finished in dramatic fashion as Chris McKown of Northview ran a 10:02.35 to edge out Andrew Bayes of Perrysburg (10:02.57).

The Southview boys have won seven of the last 11 NLL titles.

“We came out and did what we had to do,” Johnson said. “We were losing the entire meet, to come back with that last event was incredible.”

In the boys vault, Northview's Josh Jablonski won with a vault of 12-0.

In the girls meet, Napoleon's Peyton Lee earned titles in three events.

Lee took first in the 100 hurdles (15.46), the 100 (12.56) and 200 (25.97).

Clody won the 800 in 2:20.42) and 1600 with a time of 5:12.51. She also was a member of the winning 3200 relay.

“Everyday at practice we would have little reminders that we could do it this year,” Clody said. “That we had so much potential. We were excited to run our hardest. My sole motivation is to get my team as high as I can. It's definitely rewarding to win an event.”

Perrysburg, which saw its string of four straight team titles snapped last year, outdistanced Napoleon 132-116. Northview was third followed by Bowling Green.

“It was a team race all the way from youngsters to seniors,” Perrysburg coach Andrea Monheim. “We scored in almost every event. So it was a whole team effort. Most of the girls ran personal records today.”

Perrysburg's Emily Wyrick won her third straight title in the 400 (58.48). Wyrick and Clody were members of Perrysburg's victorious 1600 relay.

“There was so much motivation,” Wyrick said. “We wanted to redeem ourselves. Everyone ran really well. It was a great night.”

The Yellow Jackets' Taylor Monheim took first in the 3200 with a time of 11:31.02.

Perrysburg won both the boys and girls 3200 relay races Wednesday.

BG sophomore Maria Horrigan won two field events Wednesday, capturing the pole vault (11-0) and long jump (16-3). She also anchored the victorious 800 relay team (1:48.01).

The Maumee 400 relay team won in 51.24.

Northview's Alysha Welch won the high jump (5-4). The Wildcats also earned a win in the 300 hurdles when Janelle Noe crossed first in 46.10.

Bowling Green finished one-two in the shot put. Paige Dauterman won (32-4 ¾) and Cassadie Baker (32-3) was second.

Taylor Warner of Northview won the discus by a wide margin with a throw of 120-11.
