Locals shine at state track meet

■ DIVISION I
READ FULL: Perrysburg girls notch 2nd place in 3200 relay
Perrysburg’s Courtney Clody, Taylor Monheim, Jordan Doore, and Emily Wyrick entered the Division I state meet on Friday evening with high expectations. The Yellow Jackets foursome arrived at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium with the top D-I state meet qualifying time for the 3200 meter relay and then went out and turned in one of their best times of the season. Yet, their time of 9 minutes, 16.64 seconds was only good enough for second place, behind a Mason team that posted a winning time of 9:11.06.

“We knew we were going to have some competition because the state is the best of the best,” said Wyrick, who, along with her teammates, shed a few tears after coming up short of their goal.

Friday evening also turned into disappointment for Rogers sprinter Sasha Dailey, who was making a return to the state track championships two years after helping lead the Rams to a D-II state runner-up team showing.

■ DIVISION II
READ FULL: Liberty-Benton dominates discus at state
Liberty-Benton’s Alex DeVincentis and Liz Streaker arrived at the Division II state track meet looking to push each other in the discus competition. The Eagles seniors did just that and it led to DeVincentis claiming the state championship with a winning throw of 134 feet, 5 inches on Friday afternoon at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Streaker finished a close third with a throw measuring 128-8. Chardon Notre Dame Cathedral-Latin’s Kendra Zbinovec earned the runner-up spot with a throw traveling 128-9. The Eastwood boys will run in the 400 and 1600 relay finals, and hurdler Devin Snowden still has hopes for an individual title.

■ DIVISION III
READ FULL: Leppelmeier nabs discus title
McComb’s Becca Leppelmeier stood on the top step of the awards podium with a huge smile Friday afternoon during the state track and field championships. The McComb senior had collected the Division III girls discus state title after recording a winning toss of 144 feet, 7 inches. She also placed second in the shot put with an effort of 45-7.75.

While Leppelmeier claimed the state discus championship, Woodmore’s Megan Pendleton made it to the awards stand by placing eighth with a throw of 127-7.
