Whiteford’s Johnson, Findlay’s Brown each win 2 state track and field titles

Two is better than one.

Findlay’s Tyler Brown wins the 400-meter dash at the Division I state meet in Columbus. Brown also captured the high jump title and was second in the long jump.

For two area athletes, winning two state track and field championships was certainly better.

Findlay senior Tyler Brown and Whiteford junior Miranda Johnson each came away as double winners at their state meets this season.

Brown collected two state titles at the Division I state meet in Columbus.

He won the high jump with a personal-record of 6 feet, 10¼ inches and also captured the 400-meter race in a personal-best time 47.08 seconds.

Brown nearly pulled off another championship, but placed second in the long jump with an effort of 23-1¾ to help the Trojans tie for fourth in the team results.

Toledo Christian senior Delainey Phelps runs wins the 3200-meter race in the Division III state meet.

Among the Division I girls, the best showing was by Perrysburg’s 3200-meter relay team. Courtney Clody, Taylor Monheim, Jordan Doore, and Emily Wyrick were state runners-up with a time of 9 minutes, 16.64 seconds.

In Division III, Toledo Christian senior Delainey Phelps captured a state title in the 3200.

Phelps crossed the finish line with a personal-record time of 10:51.68. She closed out a stellar high school career by earning a state title and having the opportunity to stand at the top of the awards podium.

In Division II, Liberty-Benton freshman Michaela Butler became a state champion after winning the 200 with a time of 24.63. She was runner-up in the 100 (12.03). Eagles teammate Alex DeVincentis claimed a discus championship with a throw of 134-5.

Evergreen’s Carly Truckor earned a state title by winning the 300 hurdles in 44.12.

In Division III, Gibsonburg sophomore Colleen Reynolds captured a state crown in 400 with a time of 56.57.

McComb’s Becca Leppelmeier claimed a championship in discus with a toss of 144-7 and finished second in the shot put (45-7¾).

In Michigan, Johnson claimed two Division 4 state championships.

She defended her long jump title with a state meet record of 18-2½, and finished first in the 200 (25.94).

Johnson nearly won a third championship, but finished second in the 100 (12.86).

Also in D-4, Summerfield’s Andrew Cilley was runner-up in the 110 hurdles (15.64) among the boys, while Summerfield’s Brooke Kottke was runner-up in the the discus (107-1) among the girls.

In D-3, Erie Mason’s Nick Raymond was runner-up in two events — the 1600 (4:16.07) and 3200 (9:38.53).
