Mancinotti shoots 73 in 1st round to lead Titans

COLUMBUS — Powered by a strong performance from junior Jack Mancinotti, the St. John’s golf team kept its composure and put itself in contention for the Division I state boys golf championship heading into today’s final round on Ohio State’s Scarlet Course.

Mancinotti shot 35 on the front nine and 38 on the back for a 73 that leaves him second overall.

The Titans also are second after carding a 321 that leaves them three strokes behind Cincinnati St. Xavier (318).

“We relaxed,” Mancinotti said. “Our team came in here obviously wanting to win, and we put ourselves in good condition. It was pretty tough today with all of the wind.”

Mancinotti trails only Dublin Coffman senior Nick Sparling, who is the defending champion and shot 70 in the opening round.

St. John’s freshman Tommy Sullinger is tied for 14th (80). Also competing for the Titans were seniors Jack Meredith (82), Nicholas Graf (86), and Luke Campbell (90).

“I made my first birdie on hole No. 10 and that got me pretty pumped up,” Mancinotti said. “We just have to stay concentrated and try to do the same things we did today. We have to stay composed.”

Also competing as a team is Findlay, who is 11th (359).

Junior Spencer Shoemaker shot 87 for the team’s best opening-round score. He was followed by sophomore Sam Griffith (88), senior Jarrett Quanrud (90), sophomore Trevor St.-Jean (94), and senior Alex Schumaker (99).

“Conditions were really tough and scores were definitely higher,” coach Bob Soellner said. “The greens were fast. We definitely had higher expectations but the kids battled.”

Competing individually were Bowling Green junior Trey Walker (89) and Maumee senior Mitchell Kontak (90).

“[Kontak] missed some three- to five-footers early and only hit four greens,” Maumee coach Todd Ery said. “It’s his first time here which was an amazing accomplishment and it was such a huge relief to see him play well at district. He’s definitely deserving [of being at state].”

In the Division I girls tournament on Ohio State’s Gray Course, St. Ursula is 10th (347) and Perrysburg is 12th (382) heading into today’s final round.

Rocky River Magnificat is first (310) and two-time defending state champion Dublin Jerome is second (313).

Sophomore Lizzie Win turned in the best opening-round score for St. Ursula with an 80 that has her tied for 19th.

Columbus Watterson junior Erin Harper is first (71).

“I came down here my freshman year and it was my goal this year to improve,” Win said.

“I played all right. It was a great experience getting here and we did a lot better as a team.”

Also competing for St. Ursula were senior Jessica Antypas (93) and juniors Kathryn Young (83), Emily Antypas (92), and Monica Torda (92).

Senior Monica Dorner led Perrysburg with an 87, followed by sophomores Macy Tudor (92), Katie Diehl (93), Madison Williams (100), and Sonia Krolak (103).

Competing individually were Northview freshman Ashley Knight (90) and Anthony Wayne sophomore Maria Connelly (92).

Northview coach Andy Roth said Knight is the first girl from the school to advance to state.

“She made it as a freshman so we’re very proud,” Roth said.

“She played in a lot of tournaments over the summer. Between the course and the emotions of being here, she struggled a little bit today.”
