St. Ursula wins in regional semifinal

BROADVIEW HEIGHTS -- Top-ranked St. Ursula survived an upset bid from Chagrin Falls Kenston Wednesday night, using a favorable officials call in the deciding game to emerge with a 25-14, 17-25, 20-25, 25-11, 20-18 victory in a Division I regional volleyball semifinal played at Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School.

The Arrows (27-0) were trailing 15-14 in Game 5 when Kenston’s Emily Newell appeared to deliver the match-ending kill. But, the attack was ruled as a carry, St. Ursula was awarded the point, and eventually prevailed.

Lauran Graves led the Arrows with 17 kills, Emily Lydey had 15 kills and 23 assists, Lauren Daudelin and Elizabeth Coil contributed 13 kills each, Madelyn McCabe had 29 assists, and Maurissa Leonard had 33 digs.

The Arrows will seek their 10th trip to the state final four since 2000 when they play in the regional final Saturday at 1 p.m. here against the winner of the Solon-Amherst Steele regional semifinal.
