Rebels bounce Bulldogs 67-58 in City League showdown

Allen scores 23 points to help Bowsher win

Two of the City League boys basketball heavyweights collided Friday night as host Bowsher knocked off preseason favorite Scott 67-58.

Nate Allen pumped in a game-high 23 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter, to lead four Rebels in double figures.

Dajuan King scored 13 points while Cam White and Mark Washington added 11 and 10 points, respectively. Washington pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds.

"We executed and ran some stuff and we got some good looks and I'm proud of our effort," Bowsher coach Joe Guerrero said, of the Rebels' performance.

With White scoring eight points in the second quarter, Bowsher took a 32-24 lead into halftime.

The Rebels (5-1, 2-0 CL) led 37-33 with 4:44 left in the third quarter when a brawl started in the stands and play was halted for about 15 minutes. Police took away several people in handcuffs.

When play resumed, Bowsher outscored Scott 11-7 during the rest of the period to own a 48-40 lead. King accounted for the first five points after play resumed, scoring on a breakaway dunk and a deep 3-pointer for a 42-33 lead.

The Bulldogs (2-3, 1-1) never got any closer than six points the rest of the way. Chris Darrington led Scott with 21 points, including three 3-pointers. Chris Harris added 11 points and Trey Brown eight.

"It was two top teams in the City League and they handled their business on their home floor," Scott coach Chris Dames said. "I think we made way too many mistakes to win that game.

"We did everything we wanted to do. We scored baskets at will, but I have no idea how many layups we missed. You can't win games like that, especially against a team like that. They're confident. We're young and inexperienced and we're not there yet."

Neither coach thought the incident in the stands affected the outcome although the teams went to the locker rooms while order was being restored.

"It was unfortunate, but I was real happy that we were able to go in and talk in the locker room about what we had to do," Guerrero said. "Guys were focused and I think it helps we have so many seniors because they talked about what we had to do and didn't mention anything about what was going on in the stands."

In the fourth quarter, Bowsher maintained a comfortable lead over Scott. In the final period, Allen made a 3-pointer, scored a layup, and was 5-for-7 from the foul line.

"It's our senior year and we've got to show everybody what we're made of," said Allen, who is one of six Rebel seniors.
