Ex-chief justice's house, church rectory are stops on Maumee home tour

9/29/2005

Thanks to Waite High School, the name of Morrison Waite - once chief justice of the United States - may be more closely associated with Toledo than Maumee.

But Maumee is where Waite settled first when he came to northwest Ohio, moving into a Greek Revival style structure at 301 West Harrison St.

His former home will be one of six open to the public from noon until 5 p.m. Saturday - along with the blacksmith shop at the Wolcott House Museum Complex - during the ninth annual Historic Maumee Home Tour, a fund-raiser for the Maumee Senior Center. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 the day of the event.

Other stops on the tour:

● 226 West Wayne St., a Victorian cottage style with wraparound veranda that was built in 1892 for a Belgian glassblower who emigrated to Maumee.

● 302 West Harrison, a riverfront home built in 1850.

●205 West Broadway, built in the mid-1830s and featuring a brick exterior, wide porch, and two-story Doric columns. It once housed a tavern.

● 227 East Broadway, a 1902 Four Square that was one of the first "modern" homes built on East Broadway. It has been owned by two generations of two families.

●313 East Wayne, the rectory of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Built in 1830, it was purchased by the church in 1883 and rotated on the lot. It connects with the church, which also will open its sanctuary to visitors on Saturday.

● The blacksmith shop at the Wolcott House, 1031 River Rd.

The Historic Maumee Home Tour also will include refreshments and a display at the Maumee Senior Center of community memorabilia collected by Maumee resident Jack Hiles. His collection includes old postcards, advertising materials, pictures, maps, and yearbooks, said Janet Russ Jones, chairman of the home tour.

Parking will be available in the lot at East Wayne and Gibbs streets; the Mews off East Wayne, and First Presbyterian Church at 200 East Broadway. Free shuttle service will run throughout the afternoon.

The ninth annual Historic Maumee Home Tour takes place Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 the day of the event, from the Maumee Senior Center, Maumee Chamber of Commerce, Jacky's Depot, Dibling Floor Covering, Maumee Indoor Theater, and the Museum Store at the Wolcott House complex.
