Attack ads insult voter intelligence

10/12/2006

Elections are upon us once again and so are the political TV ads, whose sole purpose is to make one candidate look bad, and the other candidate look good.

This kind of campaigning is counterproductive and an insult to the intelligence of the American voter. The negativity turns the voters off.

To the candidate seeking re-election: Capitalize your assets, accomplishments, and vision for the future, not the inadequacy of the other candidate. You will be judged for your performance while in office, not his. If you have served with integrity, honor, and have made a positive difference, you will be re-elected regardless of the other candidate or political party.

To the candidate seeking election for the first time: You will be judged on what you bring to the table, your integrity, accomplishments, and vision for the future. Capitalize your assets, not your opponents' flaws. Their records speaks for them. Promote the issues that concerns the voters. Most of all, don't promise more than you can deliver. The American people are tired of being lied to. Prove to the voters that you are the better candidate for the job, and you will be elected regardless of the other candidate or political party.

To the voters: Make your voice heard by voting for the candidate best suited for the job, not because of loyalty to a political party.

Election rhyme seeks TV quiet time

Political ads - they're everywhere, 24 hours a day.

Accusations, angry words, and the election's a month away!

I hope Nov. 7 comes soon, and the days will pass in haste.

'Cause the "mute" button on my "remote" will have to be replaced!

Charge for accident response a bad idea

Now here's an idea whose time has come.

How about charging folks an accident response fee for ministering to our misery due to said accident? That should get us a spot on some late night funnyman's monologue, no less.

And while we are at it we may ruin someone's credit rating due to nonpayment of fees billed by our emergency response agencies.

Since I am growing older and my hearing isn't what it used to be, I think I'll search for some affordable housing somewhere outside of the city of Toledo. At least, maybe, volunteer emergency response agencies in the outlying areas won't charge me to respond to a possible unfortunate, unexpected, or painful event.

War hasn't hit most people close to home

I read the letters in reference to Marilou Johanek's column about America's involvement in the war. Trust me, if there was a draft and everyone was in danger of losing someone to this war, there would be daily articles about the protests and marches! I agree that this war has not hit close enough to most people's homes for them to get really interested and then take this administration's rhetoric about this war personally.

If I were to watch and believe all of the political ads that are on television, the only logical conclusion I could reach is that not one of the candidates is worthy of my vote. Is it any wonder that voter turnout is so low?
