Another reason to fly Detroit

6/22/2009

I watched with interest and amazement as local politicians gleefully touted the new airline - JetAmer-ica - that is supposed to save Toledo Express. I also read reports about people actually buying tickets on this new carrier.

Have any of these politicians or travelers considered any of the following: The founder of JetAmerica is the same gentleman who founded Skybus in Columbus in May, 2007.

Skybus lasted 10 months. Could it be that is when the government support funds ran out?

JetAmerica is technically not an airline: it owns nothing. It will contract to charter its one plane from Miami Air International, which will operate the aircraft. JetAmerica will be classified as a public charter, not a scheduled airline.

What happens if you are a in Newark waiting for your return flight to Toledo and JetAmerica's plane is in Melbourne, Fla., or Minneapolis with engine trouble? What kind of flight training hours do the pilots have compared to pilots on regularly scheduled airlines?

When do the taxpayer dollars run out?

Caveat emptor (current translation - fly out of Detroit)!

Marilou Johanek's column on dog walkers was amusing but she failed to mention the responsibility of dog walkers to clean up any presents said dog left on other peoples' property. On June 11, there were eight piles on my front and side lawn. That does not include the six I cleaned up over the weekend.

Dog walkers: If you are responsible enough to own a dog, be responsible enough to clean up after it.

How many congressmen who oppose single-payer health care would be willing to abandon the taxpayer-funded plan they enjoy in favor of having to pay out of their own pockets?

Chances are, few will be willing to put their money where their mouth is. They like their free health care. Can't say that I blame them, regardless of the hypocrisy.

Joe McNamara would be an excellent choice for City Council president. He has been involved in many issues that benefit people from all districts and has been available to anyone with a problem. Those who pay attention have seen the impact of his involvement, dedication, and positive outcomes.

Toledoans expect more than someone who just shows up for meetings. They expect someone who is proactive and can make change. Mr. McNamara has exceeded those expectations.
