Nevaeh's tragedy intensifies

7/18/2009

As loved ones of Nevaeh Buchanan mourn her tragic death, they are informed that she may have been buried alive. How hurtful this news must be to everyone. To think that a person would commit such an ugly crime against an innocent girl is incomprehensible.

What hurts more is to think that person who committed this crime, if caught, is going to receive a bed and warm place to sleep, three hot meals a day, clean clothes and shoes, and all the medical attention needed to live a long life.

Putting a person in jail for life after committing a crime of this magnitude is no punishment. The loved ones of Nevaeh can never get closure knowing that person is lying in a bed and wearing clothes and eating food bought with their tax dollars. How tragic that criminals are treated kindly and families suffer forever.

It doesn't surprise me to see the story about having the townships pay for sheriff's service. I'm still trying to figure out where the $5,000-plus dollars in property taxes a year we are now paying is going.

We just received a notice from the county saying the evaluation on our home is going down by $40,000. My wife says "Gee, now our taxes should go down accordingly." And I said, "Don't count on it. They'll find some way of getting them back up there." The sheriff's charges will have to be passed on. And I'm sure they can find some more.

I love the Springfield Township area, but they are making it tougher and tougher to stay there.

As part of a national health plan, I offer this suggestion:

The government should pay for the education and training of doctors, nurses, and other medical technicians, with a commitment from them to serve in government-operated medical facilities for a specified period of time, for less than prevailing wages.

This could create needed health providers at a more

competitive cost.
