Unusual budget cutting ideas

Mayor Bell has not presented anything new. He is asking for the same things that former Mayor Carty Finkbeiner did.

Toledoans are already paying twice for trash collection. Now Mayor Bell wants to increase the charge to $15 a month.

Why don't the mayor and City Council start at their offices to balance the budget? Their salaries are too high. Cut them in half, and if they receive benefits, they need to be reduced by 15 percent.

Forget about raising taxes. The public has already given. It is unheard of to give a 29 percent pay raise. Give those employees a 5 percent raise and take the rest back. Stop all double dippers.

Mr. Finkbeiner tried laying off police officers and residents' safety went downhill in a hurry. The city would rather spread officers too thin and pay them overtime than have a strong police force. What it pays in overtime could pay for a new police officer.

The best way to balance the budget is to stop spending money that isn't there.
