LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

'Storm' forecasts trouble

6/24/2011

Your June 21 editorial "The gathering storm" asked the right questions: Are we prepared to risk betting that the current run of bad weather is an aberration, or do we agree with climate scientists who warn that global warming will make our weather even more violent?

In 2011, these questions shouldn't need to be asked. Sadly, the public is less likely to believe in global warming now than five years ago. Scientists are more confident than ever before that climate change is real.

Why do we have a groundswell of climate change denial in this country? Since the 1990s, there's been a global warming disinformation campaign.

Climate change regulation is not incompatible with economic recovery.

What will it take before we wake up and realize we've been manipulated by powerful businesses with a vested interest in killing efforts to slow environmental damage?

'Vote' sticker vote too extravagant

Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted's staff must have too much time and too many resources. That office has distributed fancy three-sided cards that promotes a contest to vote for a new sticker to be given to voters.

Not only were resources spent on this card, there were several clever prospective stickers to choose from -- possibly they were professionally and expensively designed.

There's a Web site, a Facebook page, and a Twitter feed.

There would be many more worthwhile places to spend time and money than on this project, the benefits of which seem limited.

Where's Waite in 'Top Honors'?

I was glad to see your June 22 special section "Top Honors." Young people are not lauded enough for their accomplishments.

However, I wonder why there was no page for Waite High School. Certainly, there must be someone there worthy of praise.

Sylvania schools absence noted

Your June 22 supplement "Top Honors" listed students from Toledo and other area schools except for Sylvania Northview and Southview. Those schools always seem to have a lot of high achievers. Were they forgotten?

'Revolution'-ary tip saves on gas

Gasoline prices are finally dropping. But don't get too comfy; they'll likely bounce back.

To save on gas, try this; If you have a tachometer on your vehicle, use it. Keep your revolutions per minute below 2,000. I have been able to add 20 percent and more to my miles per gallon by doing just that.

It will take much self-discipline, but try it. You will like the savings.
