Raise taxes on rich to fund college

5/9/2012

Republicans in Congress can't figure out how to pay for maintaining relatively low interest rates on student loans ("Costlier college," editorial, April 26). Why not stop the President George W. Bush tax cuts for the wealthy?

Apply the money generated from higher tax rates on the rich to pay for the college education of lower-middle and middle-class students.

The GOP should give America's college students a break; they are the future of this country. Republicans should stop the politicking and do the right thing.

States should make immigration laws

Each state and not the U.S. government should handle immigration laws, because some states have more or fewer problems than other states with immigrants ("Bad law on immigration," guest editorial, April 24).

'Joe' fails to give Obama credit

Samuel Wurzelbacher, also known as "Joe the Plumber," is naive to assume that a conversion to Christianity skyrocketed Barack Obama to the presidency ("Obama's rise called 'miraculous'; 'Joe the Plumber' links presidential win to conversion to Christianity," April 26).

Is there no consideration for the intellect, courage, and personal initiative that the President demonstrated along the way to his achievement? The analysis by Mr. Wurzelbacher, the Republican nominee in the 9th Ohio Congressional District, is not so much to compliment President Obama as to take the opportunity to question his background again.

Mr. Wurzelbacher describes the President's ideology as un-American. Such a defamatory comment requires substantiation.

Food banks could use event's funds

Hundreds of people spent thousands of dollars to attend a food event to raise money for area food banks ("Taste of the Nation draws crowd to Toledo Club; Hundreds gather to feast, raise funds to fight hunger," April 30).

If all the money spent on a giant tent, security, baby-sitters, and food preparation went to the food banks, the amount raised could have swelled by thousands of dollars.

Artistic reviews much appreciated

I commend Blade reviewer Sally Vallongo for her insightful articles about Toledo's music and arts scene ("Ballet Theatre of Toledo scores with collaboration," April 22).

Thanks to intelligent and in-depth reviews from Ms. Vallongo, Toledoans are beginning to appreciate that Toledo is a treasure house of talent.
