Editorial wrongly rips Romney

In your zeal to impugn the character and intelligence of Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, you rushed to embrace the shameless communist deceiver Vladimir Putin ("Russia's full plate," editorial, Sept. 1).

The mask is now off, to show our community your true collectivist identity. Your editorial staff should read a few columns by Blade staff writer Mike Sigov, for some accurate insight into the machinations of your favorite empire.

Mapping process cries for change

Now that a proposed constitutional amendment that would change the state's redistricting process has made it to the Nov. 6 ballot, I will vote for it and urge others to do the same ("Proposal on political districts to be on ballot," Aug. 7).

A nonpartisan commission likely will do a better job of drawing congressional and state House and Senate maps.

I would hope that the League of Women Voters or some other group would sponsor a computer-generated map of proposed districts. This map would be free of all political shenanigans. The nonpartisan commission could then tweak the map if necessary.

It makes no difference which party is in power. If we continue with what we have, we are inviting continued political gamesmanship.

Restore hours to Waterville library

As I read about the glass mural to be constructed for the Waterville Branch Library, I was saddened by the fact that residents will be able to view the mural only from Mondays at noon through Fridays at 5 p.m., since the library's weekend hours were eliminated because of budget cuts ("Glass mosaic to grace Waterville library," Aug. 7).

As the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library requests additional funding in November, I request a specific list of services to be reinstated if the levy passes.

I cannot support a levy unless some weekend hours are restored to the Waterville branch.

Worried about bike safety? Fix roads

When The Blade reports motorcycle accidents, you always mention whether the rider was wearing a helmet ("Monroe man crashes motorcycle, dies," July 1). There is no law that says a motorcyclist has to wear a helmet.

A helmet is an obstruction that overrides safety, because it limits view and hearing. It adds to heat and weight on the motorcyclist's head.

I've been riding safe and hard for 50 years, and a helmet is not in my future. Motorcyclists who feel the need to wear a helmet should do so, but leave the rest of us alone.

People who are worried about motorcycle safety should instead press for fixing bad roads.
