LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Your Dec. 5 editorial “Champions” failed to mention the Sylvania Southview High School boys’ soccer team’s runner-up title in the state championship. A shout-out would be appreciated.

Battle of the Bulge, wedding marked

On Dec. 16, 1944, in the heavily forested Ardennes region of eastern Belgium and northern Luxembourg, units of the German army overran a sector of the U.S. First Army at the start of the Battle of the Bulge.

I was a sergeant with a rifle company of the 26th Infantry Division. We were in Metz, France, with Gen. George Patton’s Third Army. We were among the first divisions dispatched to the Bulge and made initial contact with the Germans on Dec. 20.

My luck ran out on Jan. 9, 1945. We were in deep snow. The temperature was zero. I was shot in the neck and evacuated. I rejoined my company after two months of recuperation.

My wife and I were married on Dec. 16, 1945, in Epiphany Lutheran Church in Toledo, exactly one year after the battle started.

Just like at the Bulge, it was zero degrees on our wedding day. But as fairy tales say, we have lived happily ever after.
