Gassing dogs is inhumane

12/24/2012

In your Dec. 11 article “Ottawa Co. asked to stop gassing dogs; anti-cruelty activists say method causes prolonged suffering,” Ottawa County Commissioner Jim Sass said he saw a dog killed in the carbon monoxide chamber and didn’t think it was inhumane. He noted that it took seven or eight minutes for the dog to perish.

If Mr. Sass were facing the same fate as some of these poor animals, I wonder which method he would choose to die. Seven to eight minutes is a long time to live when one is not able to breathe anything but poisonous gas.

As an animal lover and rescuer, I can attest to the fact that animals give much more than they take. They certainly do not deserve to be tortured at the end of their lives.

Lethal injection is much more humane.

Higher penalties would aid dogs

In response to your Nov. 29 article “Dog warden heralds start of Cutie’s Fund; Emergency care focus of donations”: If penalties for animal abuse, abandonment, and cruelty were costlier, money would be available to pay for these dogs’ hospital bills.

Puppy-mill article a public service

As a dog-friendly newspaper, The Blade is doing a public service publishing articles about the horrific puppy mills in this state (“Bill regulating ‘puppy mills’ awaits Kasich’s signature,” Nov. 28).

Many people are unaware of this problem. The love for living creatures is among the most noble attributes of man.

Put 10% from gifts to help charities

The season of love and caring is here, but it looks like the season of greed and avarice. I wish people would put 10 percent of what they would spend on Christmas toward charities such as the Salvation Army, Cherry Street Mission, and others that help the needy.

The economy may be improving for some, but need is still great. People should think of others who are less fortunate this holiday season.

U.S. postal cheer from Canada

Recently, I received a holiday greeting postcard from my mail carrier. Nice. This comes from the U.S. Postal Service, an American institution that serves primarily Americans.

On the back of the card is this: Printed in Canada. Nice.
