Autism article speaks volumes

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

I thank The Blade for your Dec. 22 article “Governor mandates coverage for autism; Insurers to include treatment, therapy.”

The Autism Society of Ohio appreciates Gov. John Kasich’s leadership in including autism services as part of the essential health-care package offered through the Affordable Care Act’s insurance exchanges for individuals with autism from birth to age 21.

Governor Kasich also added this benefit as part of the state employee health package. This shows great compassion in supporting individuals and their families who struggle to obtain insurance benefits to provide treatments for the symptoms of this disorder.

We appreciate the work of the governor and his staff, parents, advocates, legislative leaders, and business partners in recognizing the importance of autism and its effect on families in Ohio by taking this significant step.

Research shows that early intervention helps make a significant and lifelong difference in the lives of children with autism by improving social, cognitive, and communication skills, and by helping families develop the skills they need to raise their children.
