Health units are wise to cooperate
3/8/2013The initiative among Mercy, ProMedica, and the University of Toledo Medical Center marks a milestone in progress by the three major health providers in northwest Ohio (“Fostering a healthy community — together,” op-ed column, Feb. 21).
It heralds a new era of cooperation, collaboration, and communication, which are essential to such an endeavor. It is especially relevant as the federal Affordable Care Act takes effect.
The challenge and the opportunity offered by this project should be engaged by all — health-care professionals and administrators, relevant organizations, and the public.

Pride in America exists for him
A Readers’ Forum writer said he had his pride in America tarnished because a majority of voters believed “fabrications, divisive tactics, and character assassination against GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney” (“Pride in country gone with Obama,” Feb. 4). Those attacks against Mr. Romney came from his fellow GOP candidates during their presidential campaign debates.
Stating that President Obama’s citizenship was in question and suggesting that he is a Muslim, as was done by some on the right, apparently don’t count as fabrication, divisive tactics, or cause people to lose pride in America.
America is not perfect, but I’m proud to call it my home.

Extend discounts to volunteers
Some local restaurants and events offer discounts to senior citizens, people in the Armed Forces, police officers, and firefighters. But there are also men and women who volunteer at hospitals, nursing homes, food banks, the Toledo Zoo, the Toledo Museum of Art, and other organizations and sites.
Wouldn’t it be nice if restaurants and events offered a discount to these individuals? That might entice other people to volunteer in their community.

Supermarkets inspected too?
I read your inspections of Lucas County food-service operations every week. Why isn’t there news about inspections of supermarkets such as Meijer, Wal-Mart. Kroger, and Giant Eagle?
