Catholics are right to rejoice
3/26/2013Frank Bruni’s March 19 op-ed column, “With new Pope, the church should look beyond the bedroom,” is negative toward the Catholic Church.
He says that the church’s stand on contraception, birth control, and laws on divorce have alienated many Catholics. Mr. Bruni mentions sexual child abuse and other factors that lower the credibility of the church.
Mr. Bruni mentions that in 2010, Argentina passed a law legalizing same-sex marriage. Pope Francis, who then was Argentine Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio, was against that law and called it a “plan of the devil.”
The transgressions that Mr. Bruni cites are terrible, and they too are the plan of the devil.
Seeing the enthusiastic response of people all over the globe of all religions to Pope Francis’ election, I do not see any diminution of the church. Christ said: “This is my church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it.”

Editorials show partisan bias
Your March 13 Pages of Opinion spoke volumes about your bias. You had two lengthy editorials. An editorial about former Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, “Farewell to an era,” detailed political corruption, scandal, and misdeeds without a hint of Kilpatrick’s party affiliation.
Then I read the negative editorial on Ohio Gov. John Kasich, “Raise the severance tax.” The first sentence mentioned that he was Republican.

Roundabouts a good trend
Kudos to Lucas County Engineer Keith Earley for advocating traffic roundabouts in his March 3 Readers’ Forum letter, “County engineer: Roundabouts work.”
The Willys/Overland neighborhood has had a version of a roundabout for more than 50 years. If that works, why shouldn’t there be more modern roundabouts?
Of course, roundabouts would reduce red-light camera revenue, so Toledo City Council couldn’t get behind it.

Put a roundabout at Corey Road
The Lucas County Enginee’sr Web site says modern roundabouts are safer than traditional intersections with signals or stop signs, operate more efficiently, often have lower life-cycle costs, and result in increased fuel efficiency.
Improvements are scheduled this year for the Corey Road exit ramp from eastbound Interstate-475 and the adjacent intersection at Sylvania Avenue. But congestion on the I-475 eastbound exit ramp to Corey is infrequent.
Because I live on Corey Road, I notice the traffic there. Why not build a roundabout instead of adding lanes and new signals?
