Bus station should be at Southwyck

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

The ideal location for the planned new bus station would be the vacant site of the former Southwyck Mall (“TARTA revisits station plan to address business concerns; Theater, café want to keep parking lot,” March 21).

The building of an all-purpose bus terminal would allow for combined Toledo Area Regional Transportation Authority, Greyhound, and Megabus operations. It would provide a safe area for passengers and ample parking.

This would provide a needed update in an area of the city that has been forgotten about in recent years.

Art, education alive at museum

I recently attended the University of Toledo’s Opera Ensemble production of Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo, in the Cloister Gallery of the Toledo Museum of Art. The students were polished and professional in their roles. I enjoyed the experience.

When the opera ended, I made my way through the galleries and came upon a small, but engrossing, exhibit, “George Bellows and New York 1900-1930,” which was curated by an art history class from the University of Michigan.

Edward Drummond Libbey and his wife, Florence Scott Libbey, who founded the museum, were committed to the arts and to education. I’m pleased that present-day museum leaders are still committed to that legacy.

Litter spoiling Toledo’s beauty

The litter situation in Toledo has reached critical mass.

We have much to be proud of in our city. The Toledo Zoo and the Toledo Museum of Art are among the best in the country. We have Fifth Third Field and the Mud Hens. We have Huntington Arena and the Walleye, plus fantastic concerts. We also have tremendous local music, artists, and excellent restaurants.

Most important, we have good, hard-working people who raise strong families. But Toledo is getting a black eye because of the amount of litter.

If we could all take a quick look around our homes or work areas and pick up the litter that we see, it would change greatly the aesthetics of our town. Appearance means so much.

So please help, when you can, to pick up Toledo.

Mexican eatery will be missed

I can’t believe Abuelo’s Mexican Food Embassy has closed (“Mexican restaurant in Maumee closes,” March 20). My family went there often, including just three days before it closed. The place was packed, just as it was on the other days we went.

The food was delicious and reasonably priced, the staff prompt and courteous, and the surroundings pleasant.

It is hard to believe that the restaurant’s Texas-based owners considered it a poor money-maker.

It was one of the nicer restaurants in this area, and will be missed by many.
