Library: Thumbs up for schools act

7/7/2013

The Strengthening America’s Schools Act, introduced in the U.S. Senate, includes provisions for effective school library programs and recognizes the role school library programs play in student learning.

Research has shown that students have a better chance of succeeding academically when they attend schools with strong library programs.

The bill’s intent is to ensure that students have access to professionals who can help them make connections between subject areas, retrieve information, and think independently.

The bill defines an effective school library as one that is staffed by state-certified or licensed school librarians; has up-to-date books, materials, equipment, and technology, including broadband; includes regular collaboration between classroom teachers and school librarians to develop and carry out curricula, and supports the development of digital literacy skills.

The bipartisan bill would make three-year grants to school libraries in low-income areas to maintain current collections, staffed by a state-certified school librarian, and for other purposes. I give it a thumbs up.
