Make Detroit the capital of Michigan

8/7/2013

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder, members of the state Legislature, and lobbyists should relocate to Detroit for five to 10 years to live and conduct state business.

Imagine the optimism with which Michigan residents would view such a move. Health and safety issues probably would be resolved fairly quickly, benefiting current Detroit inhabitants and encouraging business and migration to the city.

New crime lab needs to be ‘green’
We are fortunate to have the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification to assist law enforcement operations (“$11.9M crime lab is set for BGSU; Bureau of Criminal Investigation office to move from downtown B.G. by fall 2014,” July 22).

Now it will have an extension of its operation affiliated with Bowling Green State University, with classes on forensic sciences. That is great.

But I don’t understand why taxpayers have to be burdened with paying what could be huge utility bills on a building that does not appear to be designed to be green. From the architectural rendering, it appears the building could be of a simpler design with less glass. I’d like to see something more energy-efficient.

Obama should tend to citizens
President Obama has been the point man on immigration reform, wanting to make illegal occupants of the United States legal. Why doesn’t he take care of U.S. citizens first?

For American citizens to have to endure poverty, the loss of personal dignity, and the failure of our government to provide any sense of hope, while we spend countless billions of dollars on people who have no right to be here, is a disgrace.

Pope John Paul II sainthood an issue
I can’t believe that Pope John Paul II is on a fast track to sainthood (“John Paul II, John XXIII approved for sainthood; Ceremony likely before end of this year,” July 6). His papacy, from 1978 to 2005, was rife with scandal.

Horrific sex scandals occurred on his watch. He had to know that priests across the world were shuttled from parish to parish, even though it was known that many of these priests were pedophiles.

Historically, it takes years to be canonized. With this fast track, it will take fewer years. That is wrong.
