Castro’s suicide was easy way out

9/21/2013

Excuse me for not caring whether Ariel Castro received proper medical and mental health care leading up to the suicide (“Castro’s prison suicide triggers 2 prison investigations,” Sept. 5).

Why should anyone care when he had absolutely no regard for those three girls’ medical or mental health for the 10 years he was torturing and brutalizing them?

He deserved a lifetime of the same treatment. Too bad he was a coward and took the easy way out.

Head out Central to Toledo, Ore.

As a kid, on the way to Harrison Lake State Park in Fulton County, I wondered where a person would end up if you kept going westbound on Central Avenue (U.S. 20). Looking in the Rand McNally atlas, I find it takes you to Toledo, Oregon, a town you overlooked in your Sept. 15 story “Towns tagged ‘Toledo’ once dotted the U.S.”

That town is just seven miles from the Pacific Ocean and is home to about 3,600 people. Like our Toledo, it is a port city, on the Yaquina River.

Question needed to be relevant

Rod Lockwood asked Troy Andrews who was more intimidating to meet: Barack Obama or Mick Jagger (“Trombone Shorty long on talent, showmanship,” Sept. 12)? One is a historic second-term U.S. president. The other is a 70-something musician who found economic success parodying a form of American folk music.

My 27-year-old son may not know who Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones is. Perhaps Mr. Lockwood could have asked Mr. Andrews questions relevant to persons under age 50.

Other residents fret over road noise

The writer of the Sept. 5 Readers’ Forum letter “Homeowner awaits noise study” asking why there can’t be noise barriers is relating a concern that many of those on my street have.

We have lived with construction noise, closed streets and dirt, since springtime. When the new Ohio Turnpike lanes are opened to traffic, the noise is going to be horrible. Outside activities are impossible because of noise at peak times.

Why is the Ohio Turnpike allowed to disturb the peace?
