2 Scott High alumni were in Congress
10/26/2013Thanks to Blade Editor David Kushma for his excellent column about Scott High School’s centennial (“Bulldog Nation at 100: Scott’s past, present converge,” Oct. 20). Not that it makes much difference, but Scott numbers two former congressmen among its alumni.
In addition to me, Donald Pease served 16 years as the representative from Ohio’s 13th District. Mr. Pease and I were members of the Scott Class of 1949, and our congressional terms briefly overlapped.

Scott centenniala grand event
It was an honor to celebrate Scott High School’s 100th birthday, and it was a privilege to have been a student there. I’m thankful for the memories and the lifelong lessons.

U.S. can’t dictate Iranian actions
Dr. Amjad Hussain’s Oct. 14 op-ed column, “Despite Israeli suspicions, Iran’s peace initiative bodes well,” was excellent. We cannot afford to ignore the misdeeds done to Iran. The United States is in no position to dictate to Iran, let alone impose sanctions, when our own hands are not clean.
Under Operation Ajax in 1953, the Central Intelligence Agency supported the overthrow of Iran’s legally elected leader and installed our puppet, Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. In 1988, a U.S. Navy missile shot down an Iranian airliner over the Straits of Hormuz, killing 290 innocent civilians.
India, Pakistan, the United States, and likely Israel have nuclear weapons. Would it not be natural for Iran to safeguard its security in a world where its neighbors have nuclear capability?
An honest confession of one’s error is the prelude to improvement.

What’s status of old steam plant?
There is a lot of talk about the shopping malls that have been torn down with nothing going in their place, as well as the old Jeep plant and the movie theater on Secor Road (“Promenade Park improvements enter 2nd phase,” Oct. 3). Some of those sites are to be developed, but what of the old Toledo Edison steam plant on the waterfront downtown?
I would like to hear what Mayor Mike Bell and challenger D. Michael Collins have to say about the status of the old steam plant.

Algae blooms hurt city as cruise stop
The Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority made the correct decision not to spend a bunch of money promoting Toledo as a cruise ship destination (“Port authority reaches out to coalition of cruise ships,” Oct. 12).
Until the toxic algae blooms are stopped, Toledo easily could become the city on Green Slime Bay.
