Bell shares traits with Bloomberg

11/1/2013

It’s not surprising that Toledo Mayor Mike Bell got a campaign contribution from New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg (“Bell outspending Collins over 4-1; Mayor’s dwindling coffers recharged by N.Y.C. leader,” Oct. 25).

Both mayors are condescending in their approach to citizens in their respective communities. Both think they know what is best for everyone. And both have a sense of entitlement that they are in a superior class to their constituents.

Maybe we all had better get our supersized Big Gulps while they are still available, because I’m sure this money came with some kind of attachment. But then, we’ll never know with the Bell administration’s history of transparent — or opaque — governing style.

Maybe another secret trip to a place Mayor Bell hasn’t been to on a regular basis is in order. May I suggest East Toledo?

Collins doesn’t seem to care

“Collins Cares” — what a joke (“Collins escalates push for mayor with TV spots,” Sept. 29).

A couple of years ago, we had an ice storm; many trees and power lines were down. After cleanup had taken place by competent city employees, I sent a note to my City Council representative, D. Michael Collins. I asked whether the city could drop off some dirt to fill a hole.

My response was a note from someone in his office thanking me for my concern and telling me about a future town hall meeting. Meanwhile, he was in Columbus speaking before a state legislative committee in defense of his union cronies.

If this is what we have to look forward to if he is elected mayor, Toledo will look like Detroit in a short time.

Change of mind: A vote for Collins

I originally thought that Toledo needs a young, more-energetic person to be mayor — not Mayor Bell or Mr. Collins. After listening to and reading about the candidates, I have changed my mind about not voting.

I am going to vote for Mr. Collins. He is more of an independent than Mr. Bell is or ever was.

Ex-hotel’s status a candidates’ issue

What is the status of the former Hotel Seagate, next to the Park Inn on Summit Street? I pass this structure daily. It is an eyesore, especially considering the upcoming improvements to Promenade Park.

There was news of the sale of the building to an unnamed buyer almost a year ago. But nothing has been done to it. What do Mayor Bell and Mr. Collins plan to do about this issue?
