TPS teachers thank voters for levy OK

11/10/2013

The voters of Toledo deserve a big thank-you for approving the crucially important Toledo Public Schools levy renewal, which stands as a significant acknowledgement that improving our public schools takes real resources (“TPS tax finds wide favor,” Nov. 6).

Community leaders joined forces with educators to ensure passage of the levy, showing once again that working collaboratively is the best route to strengthening TPS.

Last week’s vote stands in stark contrast to misguided school districts around the nation that make devastating cuts in public education, then criticize public schools as failures. Our community understands that to reclaim the promise of public education, we need to strengthen our neighborhood public schools by focusing on what works to improve teaching and learning.

We will continue to fight for a voice in education decisions; for children to have an engaging, well-rounded curriculum; and for children’s health, social, and emotional needs to be met with wraparound services.

These are the principles that unite teachers, school staff, parents, students, and the community. When we work together in common cause for great public schools, our kids will be well-equipped for college and careers.
