Ohio Northern takes steps to curb costs

11/24/2013

I want to clarify a misperception in the Nov. 11 Readers’ Forum letter “ONU’s changes give no relief,” which referred to Ohio Northern University’s program to reduce costs for students and parents.

The writer is correct that reductions in some students’ tuition bills next year will be balanced by reductions in university scholarship and grant amounts. The writer overlooks that without the ONU board of trustees’ approval of the “Ohio Northern Promise” last month, tuition likely would have been raised an average of 3 percent next year, for a net cost increase to current students.

By avoiding increased costs for current students next year, reducing tuition for new students, and providing incentives for students to graduate in four years, Ohio Northern is working hard to make an excellent education affordable to more young people while reducing their debt.
