Photo IDs not such a bad thing
11/26/2013When it is suggested that photo identification should be required from voters, Democrats cry foul, saying that’s voter suppression (“Right to vote,” editorial, Nov. 21).
Democrats say those of us who believe that a photo ID should be required to vote just want to suppress minority and poor voters. But in many other instances a person needs a photo ID, so why not when voting?
Photo IDs don’t suppress voting; they just ensure that the person voting is the person allowed to vote. The biggest suppressors are those who manipulate the electorate when it suits their agenda or their candidate.

Collins’ start bodes ill for city
When Toledo residents voted for D. Michael Collins for mayor, did they think you’d be getting all that’s followed (“Mayor-elect seeks higher salary for business development chief; Collins asks council to raise cap for position to $135,000,” Nov. 20)?
Mr. Collins has enlisted former mayors Carty Finkbiner and Jack Ford, former Finkbeiner Chief of Staff Bob Reinbolt, and union bosses. He proposes a 46 percent pay increase for just one position in his administration.
And he supports legislation to shut down a legal business, The Family Puppy. And this is just in a few short weeks?

Bell, Collins ran good campaigns
It took two independent candidates to show Toledo’s two major political parties how to run a civilized campaign. Both Mayor Mike Bell and Mr. Collins kept to the issues, and demonstrated dignity by not engaging in the personal attacks that mark other elections (“Fresh off victory, Collins sets sights on transition; Toledo’s mayor-elect says new job won’t change him,” Nov. 7).
I thank them for running clean campaigns. It was a breath of fresh air.

Not casting ballot plain laziness
People can give all the lame excuses they want for not voting, but it just boils down to laziness (“They gave an election and almost no one came,” op-ed column, Nov. 10).
People have given their lives for the right to vote. If we don’t use that right, we will lose it.

I wonder how many companies have moved to Toledo because we have unions.
