Child sex trafficking deplorable
1/20/2014I thank state Rep. Teresa Fedor (D., Toledo) for keeping the problem of sex trafficking in the public light (“Fedor decries 2-tier soliciting sentences; Child’s age irrelevant, lawmaker says,” Jan. 15).
Toledo is a hub for sex trafficking. These are our young girls — someone’s daughter or granddaughter. Sex trafficking is a crime beyond comprehension for most of us.
We must continue to support local and state efforts to abolish this crime involving our children.

Corps report on carp is no help
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers presented Congress only with options, none particularly recommended, to solve the Asian carp problem (“Report lays out 8 ways to stop carp,” Jan. 7).
By the time we start to solve this impending disaster, Asian carp will have destroyed not only the mega-billion-dollar fishing and tourism industry in western Lake Erie, but also that of the Great Lakes region and the St. Lawrence River.
The industrial Midwest and 20 percent of the world’s fresh water supply are at risk, yet the Corps and Congress don’t seem to worry about that.

Government must act against carp
We have read, watched, and listened as news reports for more than two years have repeatedly cited what most everyone agrees is the solution to the Asian carp problem: The physical separation of the Mississippi River basin from the Great Lakes basin (“Block the carp — now,” editorial, Jan. 10).
The costs to accomplish this task are staggering. However, they pale against the costs to the Great Lakes region if nothing is done soon.
The study by the Corps of Engineers offers only recommendations, without a solution. Where is the leadership at the federal level?
The Great Lakes freshwater supply is looked at by many as a solution to low water levels and drought in many areas of our country. The invasive species of fish now threatening that water supply should spur action at the highest levels of government.

Using poison to kill fish stupid
Even thinking of dumping poison in our drinking water to kill Asian carp is the stupidest idea I ever heard. No one knows what the collateral damage would be. It could have effects on the environment for decades.
What genius allowed Asian carp in the country in the first place?
