Growing Taiwan-China link important

3/16/2014

Your Feb. 15 editorial “China-Taiwan progress” was correct in pointing out the importance of the recent historic meeting between representatives of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and mainland China.

Since Ma Ying-jeou, president of the Republic of China, took office in May, 2008, he has adopted a policy of pragmatic and constructive dialogue between the Republic of China capital of Taipei and mainland China’s capital of Beijing. There have been broad engagements in business, cultural, and social exchanges between the two sides.

While these steps taken by the Republic of China government help reduce the tensions between the two countries, separated by the Taiwan Strait, we urge our American friends to continue to support Taiwan on all fronts. Taiwan’s continued defensive strength is an important factor in our ability to engage confidently with mainland China.

We also urge the international community, including the United States, to support Taiwan’s inclusion in the Trans-Pacific Partnership, to promote prosperity and stability in the Asian-Pacific region and the world.
