Shooting at 2 women is shameful

4/16/2014

Isn’t it a shame that the two women who did the right thing by reporting who allegedly shot a mild-mannered German shepherd were shot at themselves (“Toledo’s profiles in courage,” editorial, April 12)? No wonder people are afraid to give information to the police.

I hope those who did the shooting get what they deserve. But that punishment never will compare to the pain and agony the poor dog went through.

2 women make community better

Congratulations to Janet Goforth and Julie Mason for doing what was right about the shootings of the dog (“Women report threats after naming a suspect,” April 5). Women such as these make good and safer neighborhoods.

June deserves to be treated royally

I hope the German shepherd, June, finds a great home. After all she’s been through, she deserves to be treated like a princess.

Jacobs changed gold into lead

Joseph H. Zerbey IV, chairman of the University of Toledo board of trustees, extolled outgoing President Lloyd Jacobs as a leader who transformed UT into a greater institution with the addition of the former Medical College of Ohio (“Finding a leader,” editorial, March 30).

“Transformational leader” are buzz words often used to designate a process by which an institution originally created to serve public interests is transformed into one that serves vested private interests.

Dr. Jacobs said that his years at UT were among the happiest of his professional life. That may be true, but I have the sense that such happiness was not widely shared among those who make up the heart of the university: its students and faculty.

With his departure set, it’s time to reflect on what Dr. Jacobs achieved as a university leader. My assessment: While president of UT, Dr. Jacobs accomplished an amazing feat of alchemy by which he transmuted gold into lead. Now that’s transformational leadership.

Where were Giant Eagle’s ads?

Giant Eagle Inc. is closing its two supermarkets in our area on May 3, blaming competition from Meijer, Kroger, and The Andersons (“Giant Eagle to close local grocery stores on May 3,” March 22). Those competitors have ads in The Blade every week. Where were Giant Eagle’s?
