Investment smacks of déjà vu
4/28/2014In light of Ohio’s experience with the Tom Noe scandal, why would Gov. John Kasich’s administration put $50 million in a health-care real estate investment fund run by Wisconsinite Jon Hammes, a big-time player in national Republican politics (“Injured workers’ money; Ohio to invest $50M in Wis. real estate fund; BWC deal seeks to diversify portfolio, recalls Noe case,” April 19)?
The gold standard in that segment of the market is Health Care REIT, whose headquarters are on Dorr Street in West Toledo. Why not think Ohio first, Governor Kasich?
Will this be a wise investment or déjà vu?

GM betrayed consumers’ trust
The General Motors recall debacle shows that for many years, GM put cost-cutting and profits far ahead of safety concerns (“2 engineers suspended for role in GM’s recall delay; Pair on paid leave over ignition switch probe,” April 11).
If GM could sell more flawed vehicles, then the cost of defending against lawsuits for injuries or fatalities was considered an acceptable business expense. It is becoming obvious that GM intentionally withheld information about the ignition key issue when it filed for bankruptcy.
A criminal investigation needs to be undertaken. Past and present GM executives and employees should be prosecuted if they violated the law.
As a former GM customer, I will never again set foot inside a GM dealership. GM has forfeited my trust. The bailout of GM was a mistake. It should have been allowed to go out of business.

Profiled foods not really unhealthy
Why do you print articles about hazardous foods such as cantaloupe, poultry, and tomatoes (“Surprise! These ‘healthy’ foods can be hazardous to your health,” March 25). There must be something more important to warn us about.
Is anyone who read the article going to change his or her eating habits? I think not.
I evidently have placed myself in grave danger for the past 60-plus years, because I have eaten all types of summer fruits and berries fresh from the vines and trees without washing them or my hands. Have I ever fallen ill to those poisonous foods? No.

Another gem of Toledo: the zoo
Blade columnist Keith C. Burris’ April 1 commentary, “Our symphony: a not-so-hidden gem in Toledo,” was heartwarming. But he omitted another gem: the Toledo Zoo. The zoo is a remarkable place for people of all ages.
