With all the instructional time local students missed because of the bad winter, and all of the worry about how they could make up valuable lessons, how can schools justify letting kids spend a day watching the Toledo Mud Hens play (“Students’ support lifts Mud Hens to win,” May 13)?
Will the students receive baseball bags instead of blizzard bags to make up the work they missed that day?
Attention to TPS effort appreciated
I appreciated the attention The Blade gave to the positive steps taken in Toledo Public Schools’ Chase STEM Academy to keep students in school and on a positive growth trajectory (“TPS implements preventive approach to student discipline,” May 4).
The article outlined the ways in which children of all backgrounds will achieve when they are given the help and support they need by dedicated school personnel.
I’ve been participating in one of the Dialogue to Change groups that recently began, in part, because of support by The Blade. Our group monitors news media to bring to the attention of media gatekeepers their important role in positive and/or negative racial/ethnic items that are published or aired.
In our group’s discussion, challenges of a racial and ethnic nature in our educational institutions came up time and again. The TPS story was a positive note among what are often negative stories about people of color.
Toledo is lucky to have these efforts for our children in the schools, and lucky to have The Blade’s interest in these matters.
