Alternative energy needs trumpeted

6/8/2014

I thank The Blade and Editor David Kushma for carrying the torch for alternative energy (“Ohio swims against the clean-energy tide,” op-ed column, June 1).

For too long, outside dark-money groups have controlled this subject, with an expensive propaganda campaign posing, in many cases, as the product of grass-roots organizations.

I’m glad to see The Blade has taken an interest where underfunded pro-alternative energy groups have no voice.

Johnson also aided MCO-UT merger

Your May 25 article “Toledo’s medical college reaches golden milestone; Blade’s Paul Block, Jr., led drive to establish school” was a beautiful and well-balanced depiction of the rich history behind the former Medical College of Ohio as well as its historic merger with the University of Toledo.

Mr. Block poured his heart and soul into the institution, as did the many others you highlighted throughout your 50th anniversary coverage.

One individual was left out of your historical synopsis of the merger of MCO and UT. Daniel Johnson was instrumental in bringing the merger to its completion during his tenure as UT’s president.

He knew the merger would be a difficult task, but met the challenge head-on with calmness, class, and dignity. We were fortunate to have him at the helm.
