Technology a good tool to fight crime

6/19/2014

One of the best ways to deter crime is technology (“Cameras credited with curbing crime; Toledo’s mayor not sold on devices,” June 8). Everyone who lives and works in Toledo needs to join the fight against crime.

Residents can take cell-phone photographs of suspicious activity. Business owners can install surveillance cameras. The police department can increase the use of cameras.

There is no substitute for the hard-working men and women in blue who patrol the streets 24/7. To help these public-safety forces, city government needs to provide all the tools available in this data-driven world. Let’s keep all the cameras rolling.

Traffic cameras don’t profile

I’m all for keeping those traffic cameras — even adding more of them.

Our streets are safer with those cameras. And cameras don’t profile motorists.

Cheney’s rip of Obama is weak

During an interview on Fox News last month, former Vice President Dick Cheney said that President Obama is a “very, very weak president.”

Isn’t anyone else tired of the bluster of a man who asked for and received five draft deferments during the Vietnam war era? He shamelessly, with other neo-conservatives, led this country into an unnecessary war in Iraq in a fraudulent search for weapons of mass destruction.

The war caused the deaths of thousands of Americans and injured thousands more. All for what: oil and Halliburton?

When is President Obama going to fight back against Mr. Cheney?

Cemeteries get kudos for upkeep

In response to the May 31 Readers’ Forum letters “Use inmates to upkeep cemetery” and “Forest Cemetery’s condition sad”: Kudos to the four cemeteries my husband and I visited on Memorial Day weekend. They were Amboy Township Cemetery in Metamora, Ohio; St. Mary Catholic Cemetery in Assumption, Ohio; Lyons Cemetery in Lyons, Ohio, and Pleasant View Cemetery in Blissfield, Mich.

They were beautifully maintained for the special weekend, and they look good all year.

In light of the criticism of Forest Cemetery, we felt it was important to thank the caretakers of the above four cemeteries for their excellent work.
