We owe it to veterans to help Iraq

6/20/2014

In response to your June 17 article “U.S. troops will be sent back to Iraq”: Whenever we go to war, we must complete our mission. It does not matter that President George W. Bush was wrong about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.

Our nation owes it to every soldier who fought in Iraq, especially those who were injured or killed, to keep the Iraqi government stable and to not let terrorists take control. Otherwise, their sacrifices will have been in vain.

We must help the Iraq army drive back the terrorists. We have the firepower with our planes and drones to back the Iraqi army.

Vice President Joe Biden said that President Obama had a strong backbone. It is time for Mr. Obama to show that’s true.

U.S. shouldn’t help Iraqi army

President Obama is sending troops to Iraq to bolster the Iraq military, whose soldiers dropped their weapons and ran home (“U.S.-trained Iraqi military falters,” June 13). If even one more U.S. soldier is lost in Iraq to help its cowardly military, the President should be impeached.

Keep-left law needs explaining

There is a 2002 Ohio law that requires motorists to move to the left when approaching an emergency vehicle that is parked on the right berm of the road with its emergency lights on. I was made aware of this last month, when I was northbound on U.S. 23 north of Fostoria.

I saw emergency lights flashing ahead and slowed down. As I got close, a state trooper stepped onto the roadway. I had nowhere to go because oncoming traffic prevented me from moving far to the left.

I sounded my horn to warn the trooper. He ducked into his car and chased me. He pulled me over, agitated that I sounded my horn at him. He told me that I broke the law by not getting over to the left. He gave me a warning.

Law enforcement and the public need to be better educated about this law.

Cockfighting issue needs coverage

With regard to your May 26 editorial “Cruelty, for fun and profit,” perhaps The Blade should devote just as much coverage to cockfighting as you do to dogs and Lucas County Canine Care & Control. That should raise awareness of the cockfighting issue.
