Payout to UT chief is too much

7/3/2014

Your June 28 article “Hefty payout for Jacobs’ departure angers some; UT faculty among those feeling sting of amount” says some people might be angry about Dr. Lloyd Jacobs’ exorbitant payout upon leaving the University of Toledo presidency. Thousands more Toledo residents probably feel the same way.

The grabbing of riches by Dr. Jacobs is appalling. As UT tuition rises, students and their parents take on more debt to pay for this greed. The UT Board of Trustees enables this process. Shame on all the trustees for approving this.

Dan Saevig, UT’s associate vice president for alumni relations, said in your article that he hadn’t heard any comments about Dr. Jacobs’ amended contract.

Mr. Saevig is wrong. I am upset. And I am not alone in feeling that way.

UT’s future hinges on credibility

Dr. Jacobs’ departure as UT president is costing UT more than $1.2 million (“Jacobs gets $392,700 for 3 years, plus perks,” June 24). Those in charge of hiring the next president should keep a few things in mind.

UT students should not have to pay higher tuition for an inflated view of the worth of a leader to take UT into the future. UT has made too many questionable hires to let down faculty, staff, and students again.

UT’s board of trustees should pick a new leader who can relate to students. The university needs credibility that has been lacking in light of Dr. Jacobs’ golden parachute and the University of Toledo Innovation Enterprises debacle.

Uncontrolled costs affect tuition

Parents who write tuition checks for their children’s UT education can wonder whether a portion will go to Dr. Jacobs’ soft landing. The cost of higher education is out of control, specifically for administrative salaries, perks, and severance packages.

And what’s with the clause that prohibits Dr. Jacobs from making negative remarks? Is something rotten behind the scenes?

Jacobs’ payment is ridiculous

Paying an ex-UT president nearly $400,000 a year for three years is ridiculous.

Jacobs’ payment sets gold standard

Dr. Jacobs’ golden parachute is more like a golden 787. Students and families should wonder no longer why tuition at UT rises.
