Collins’ focus on smokers is misplaced
7/14/2014Toledo Mayor D. Michael Collins has bigger fish to fry than attempting to refuse employment to those who smoke or use tobacco products (“Smokeless,” editorial, July 2).
Smoking is legal. How about focusing on the illegal activity in this city, such as the many shootings, scofflaw landlords, and lack of action in the Marina District?

Marina District needed casino
In response to your June 27 article “Collins casts doubt on Marina District future”: If Hollywood Casino Toledo had been built on Marina District property, the area from the Martin Luther King, Jr., Bridge to Tony Packo’s restaurant at Front and Consaul streets would be vibrant.
Whoever put the casino at its present location was not acting in Toledo’s best interest. The casino has no place to grow.

Is TPS audit languishing?
What progress is being made with Toledo Public Schools’ performance audit?
The community members on the panel to oversee implementation of the audit meet every other month, but do not appear eager to carry out their task of ensuring that TPS follows the audit’s recommendations.
At the panel’s April meeting, five members were present, but it is supposed to be a nine-member panel. The June meeting was called off when no panel members showed up.
It seems that the Toledo Board of Education cannot recruit enough qualified people to serve on the panel and earn the trust of the public.

GOP owned by its wealthy donors
Republican elected officials have turned themselves into the party that says: I’ll sell my vote to the highest donor (“In GOP House, establishment prevails,” op-ed column, June 23).
I voted primarily for Republican candidates for many years, because I believed they represented voters and were attempting to provide the best leadership for our country.
Slavery has been abolished, but a form of it has risen again. Many Republican elected officials are owned by their wealthy donors.

Be wary of who gives Iraq advice
Having Republican U.S. Sen. John McCain and neoconservatives Paul Wolfowitz, and William Kristol give their opinions about what we should do in Iraq is like asking the captain of the Titanic for lessons on evading icebergs (“Obama won’t rule out airstrikes,” June 13).
